Guinea Pig Death

The Guinea pig passed away this past weekend…  a moment of silence for the pig

smooth coat guinea pig

Graham the Guinea pig adopted at 3 died at 5  RIP  5/6/11

We lost Grahams  “life pig”   Smore this passed in November.  Smore,  he actually actually more dramatic in death  looking all nasty legs sticking out, mouth open and stuff.    Graham pass away quickly and in is little house,  it looked like when he was sleeping ..

The next morning at 5:30 am, I made the decision not to tell the kids till after we got home from my sons swim meet.  No need to get the kid up set.  We we got home I told them.. no real tears.

My son said casual “that is sad .. but he was old for a pig.”

*(note we have lost 1 cat 2 dogs 1 pig) in the last 3 years.. so death is becoming part of life in regards to our animals

So today,  I head over to the SPCA (animal shelter) to donate large guinea Pig cage.  I load it in the truck.  I walk in the shelter and ask  if they take old cages.  They say yes… this is where I lapsed in judgment. I turned and walked into the cat/small animal room.  NOT A Wise Choice.

I am now the proud owner of…

guinea pig wired hair

Moose a 1 year old  wired hair guinea pig

guinea pig long hair

Frankie a 6 year old long haired guinea pig  (yes,  I did say 6 years old- he will be dead in a year)

The thing is my husband was holding Frankie.  He calls me and tells me the pig has a huge boil on his back, major infection and it stinks. See the hair covered it when I got him and the shelter has a policy of not holding the animals prior to adoption .  My husband now calls me the Maiden of Death to Animals.

  1. My boys were sitting here, looking at your pics and asking for one- although they think those are bunnies with little ears.

I don’t think I can handle pets yet.

  2. I know exactly how you feel, but I choose the older ones on purpose. They are the least likely to be chosen at a shelter and the least likely to have a great set of last years if they make it to the pound. My aim is to make there last bit here as calm, peaceful, and joyful as it can be.

    1. I feel exactly the same way if it is a month or a year they are happy for a short time. Frankie- we nursed back to good health, then he became quite active, then pass quickly at night only made it for a few months, but he was happy in a big cage with a fiend and love,

  3. my guinea pig DOUG died yesterday at 3 pm. he was 5 or 6. he just stopped drinking water and eating anything except little tiny bites of banana and lettuce. this went on for 5 days then he seemed ok he was running in his cage, singing purring, two days later he was back to hiding in his hut and not eating or drinking. i cleaned his cage and then noticed that he wasnt moving from the corner, id put the water nozzle close to his mouth and hed take a lil drink then hed refuse it. i went to work thinking he was going to be dead when i got home, he wasnt! he waited till i got home and i held him till he stopped breathing. with all that said ,he was a rescue pig a friend got him for her kid and then she couldnt afford food or bedding for him. she was going to let him out in the woods. {i wonder if her daughter costed her too much would she just send her out in the woods?}
i basicly snatched the cage with doug in it, and i told her that shes” not throwing this lil animal away. animals arent just toys to amuse you till you get bored with them.” i took him home and altho i am sad hes dead, and i wont hear him greet me with whistles when i walk in the door, just knowing i saved him from being thrown out in some cold forest to fend for himself. comforts me knowing i gave him the best life he could have had

    1. So sad when you loose your pet. I am so glad you rescued him. They would not survive out side a cat would kill him. I am a lover of the noises, my husband was surprised how much he likes them. I am feeling for you, let me know it you get another.
