13 Great Ideas to get your kids eating veggies #See the Lite with LiteHouse Dressings:   Recently I was invited to dinner with Litehouse Foods to learn about the befits of using a fresh Litehouse dressing in your menu plan.   The dinner was held at ELA in Philly, It is hosted by a local dietitian Dr Janet Brill  with live cooking demo’s and recipes using Litehouse Food products.  I really enjoyed the evening, our discussion on health ideas for kids was my favorite part of the evening so I have to share:

13 Great Ideas to getting kids eating veggies:

  1. Have kids go to the store with you and identify the produce,  let then touch and smell.
  2. While at the store tell the child to pick something (choose by color) to try when they get home-then cook with them
  3. Make food fun-  great shapes use a cookie cutter or pairing knife to cut cool shapes –  I like a cucumber cupsradish rose  or carrots into a heart
  4. Kale chips turning veggies into a crunch snack
  5. Try fun size veggies lite the little pepper sweet, fingerling potatoes, or purple broccoli
  6. Have kids cook with you.
  7. Try roasting veggies it tends to soften strong flavor, or combined with a honey or maple flavors (works great with Brussels sprouts)
  8. Come up with fun clever names Broccoli are “Trees”  you eat like a Dinosaur or Eat “Alien Brains (Brussels sprouts) or “Spears”of asparagus
  9. Lead by example if you eat veggies the children will too
  10. Institute a 3 bite rule  1- try, 1 bite to taste, 1 to decide (this is a stable in our home)
  11. Grow your own veggies and fruit- nothing is better then picking a grape or cherry tomato fresh of the vine
  12. Try offering a dip for your kids to dip in like fresh Litehouse ranch
  13. Teach them also that veggies can also create color like a beet, spinach,  or a watermelon, or a potato stamp, corn art in the fall..Art projects with food the more they play with food the more likely they are to try them.

What are some of your tips to get the kids to eat Veggies?

It was a great evening.  I loved learning about healthy eating and Litehouse Family owned bussiness.  They Litehouse taught us tips and tricks like cutting down on your calorie intake by mixing Olive Oil with a salad Litehouse fresh dressing to use less dressing and also get the benefits of olive oil a good cholesterol in your diet.  All great things to pass on to our children.

Seet the Lite 12 ways to get kids to eaat their veggies.

I love Litehouse the fresh dressing that needs to be refrigerated before and after opening , lets me know Litehouse is a great health dressing with less preservatives.   If I am taking the time to cook with the freshest ingredients shouldn’t’ my dressing be as fresh as the other ingredients I am feeding my family?

Check out this Kale salad  the Litehouse site has amazing fresh recipes for your entire family.

How to teach responsibility : That can grow with your child

Pley Disclosure

How to teach responsibility ?:  I have been thinking alot about one of the prompts I was given to write about for my last Pley post “How do you teach young kids about responsibility?”  My oldest is 15 yep,  just turned it last month.  I have to say everyday, I am more and more in love with who my son has become.  Not only has he become responsible but a truly caring person.  He looks at the world through empathetic eyes and views the world as his “responsibility.”

I know, a 15 year old who really cares about others, he does, which still takes me as by surprise even though he has always been this way.  This weekend he helped a 12 year boy swim across a pool kicking for the 1st time after 4 years swimming practice.  Rooting  his “little buddy” on to win gold, it made my heart swell to watch them both grow.  He has taken responsibility for his buddy success. I love when  find out that he has stopping to see a neighbor on his way home from school without being asked to check that he is “all right”. He want to make sure his older friend is safe and healthy.

Swimming_IMG_2844

Today i was asked,   How did your Son come to understand responsibility for enhancing others lives?  I said I always stressed the importance of caring and understanding for others.

Some people have more,  and some have less,  some just are plan happy with the gifts they are given.

It started when he was little I would have him run soup to older neighbors, or have them work with me to give donation to a toy bank.   I remember my little boy wanting to give all his saved money when a collection was not taken.  He said  he wanted to give because it was his responsibility to give to other kids that had less.  He is still your typical teen never picking up his mess, regardless he is always amazing in my eyes.

Allowing kids to find balance and learn the world is a much bigger place then their block or street. Teaching there are others that are in your own world that can benefit from kindness.  Children will learn it always comes back to you 2 fold.  Just the basics be good and kind then responsibility will come.

How do you teach Responsibility?

This Post was sponsored by Pley-  Pley is a monthly toy subscription based service that allows you to pick out the toy of your choosing.  The toy of your choice gets shipped to you. When the child is finished you simply put the toy back in the packaging and ship it back postage paid.   You are taking responsibility to not add to landfills and teach your child responsibility for a toy.  It is a “Win Win” on the responsibility front.   It is a rental toy dream because your kids get to play with all those expensive toys sets without the cost.   That is also being responsible with your money.   Check out Pley here.

Into the Wood Movie Review Is it good for Kids?

into the woods movie reviewInto the Wood Movie Review :  We were invited to a screening of Into The Woods.  I took my daughter and her best fiend both are 9 years old.  The movie is based on the Musical Into the Woods.   The movie is a 2+ hours and it is a musical,  it is geared more towards adults and older kids.  My daughter and her friend were a great age.  I don’t think it would be appropriate for a younger child because there are implied deaths of characters.

Quick Overview:

Into the Wood Movie Review

The scenery is dark because it all takes place in a woods.  But the scenery is beautiful and very creative.

The costumes are wonderful,  I am a fan of the witches, played by Meryl Streep.

Story interweaves the characters and fairy tales story’s.  The Music and singing is fantastic.

My Daughter loved  the Princes song which was campy, sarcastic, and just plan fun.

Enjoy the movie;

The Waterworks museum is run by the The Fairmount Water Works, the ideal location to learn more about the life in and around the river, was constructed in 1812 to pump water from the Schuylkill River. Almost from the day the waterwheels began turning, the graceful neoclassical buildings and beautiful grounds made the place an international tourist attraction renowned for melding nature and technology. Today, the Fairmount Water Works is the Delaware River Basin’s watershed education hub, offering visitors information about the impact of water on their daily lives and how they in turn impact their water supplies. Located off Kelly Drive in Philadelphia’s East Fairmount Park, the Fairmount Water Works features a variety of hands-on, highly interactive exhibits including a live view of the Fairmount Dam fishway and a flyover of the Schuylkill River watershed.

FLOW FEST

September 21, 2014   1pm-dusk

As the Fairmount Water Works—one of Philadelphia’s first tourist attractions—approaches its 200th birthday, it debuts the FLOW Festival. FLOW (For the Love Of Water) is an outdoor showcase of interactive, family-friendly exhibits and activities offering a glimpse into the future of this historic site. On September 21, visitors can “splash up a tune” using water and technology, create rhythms with dripping ice and steel drums, and enjoy a dramatic finale with a Schuylkill-inspired dance performance and a light show illuminating the Fairmount Water Works’ impressive neoclassical architecture. These are just a few of the many exciting activities that await guests during this “makers” festival.

“Anyone who loves the environment, who appreciates history, art and science, or just wants to have fun, will find something at our FLOW Fest,” said Karen Young, Director of Fairmount Water Works. “Through the creativity of local artists, attendees will discover the Water Works’ history and exciting future and the power and mystery of the Schuylkill River.”

kids learning at fairmount park waterworks

From 1 p.m. to dusk, the Fairmount Water Works’ majestic grounds will be packed with all manner of interactive, family-friendly activities, including:

  • Splash Organ – Using the famous piano scene from the movie Big as inspiration, local artist Lee Tusman designed this installation, which uses a simple piece of technology to turn buckets of water into an instrument.
  • Swim the Fishway – With only fabric and wood, local artist Kathryn Sclavi will create a replica of the passageway below the Water Works that allows fish to swim upstream to hatch their eggs. Guests will create their own fish puppet and “swim” it through the display, simulating the fish’s journey.
  • Build a Water Drop – Guests will help create a giant wave sculpture made out of hundreds of interlocking “raindrop” discs.
  • River Net – An oversized fabric installation that depicts the power and essence of the Schuylkill River.
  • Grand Finale Light Show – The festival ends in dramatic fashion with a light show, accompanied by original music and footage, reflecting the poetry and power of the river.

Making fun Snacking with California Raisins Art

California Raisins artIt is that time of year again and we are getting ready to go back to school thinking about snacks and lunches.  What can you give the kids to make lunch fun?  California Raisins make a great back to school snack sweet and find to share.   So when the Clever girls asked me to do a sponsored post creating art with California Raisins.   I got the whole family involved my husband, son, and daughter.     My kids love raisins so it was not a difficult task to get them involved.

Some fun facts about California Raisins:

  • California Raisins are an all-natural, dried-by-the-sun fruit you can feel good about sending with your kids as they head back to school or offering as an after-school snack. The ingredient list says it all: Raisins.
  • Convenient and portable, California Raisins are a great choice for wholesome, healthy, on-the-go snacking. They are a great value, too! According to the USDA, raisins are the most economical dried fruit.
  • California Raisins come by their sweetness naturally. With California Raisins, the nutrition label tells a great story: Zero fat, no cholesterol and no added sugar. Plus, raisins offer 9% of your daily fiber and potassium, and 6% of your daily iron. (per quarter cup serving)

We started with 2 different types of California Raisins  and California  green raisins.   Then we had the kids make pictures, on trays. They had a fun time creating event my 13 year old did one.  Raisins art flower

My daughter arrived home from camp and she promptly wanted to join in on the fun. The combo of the red and yellow raisins allowed us to use the color for shading.   Raisin_art_013_001-29raisin art

Let your kids create some art after school with a healthy raisin snack,  or include an index card in there lunch boxes.
